Coombs' test

This detects antibody on the patient's red cells

Named after Robin Coombes who did this with some colleagues in Cambridge in 1945

Direct test may be opsonising, complement fixing or agglutinating

Indirect test detects antibody in the serum

This is used in blood cross-matching
